When you’ve been actively involved in the music industry as I have, you’ll know a thing or two about the acoustic guitar. In fact, as a music producer, I’m not shy to admit that, as a stand-lone instrument, it’s my first love. But without getting into finer details -like tempo and the roomy effect of reverberation- I think it’s important to state, from the outset, the importance to focus on your acoustic guitar strings for now. The outer shell of your guitar does play a role in the overall quality of the sound you produce, however, not compared to the condition and quality of your chords.
Sound Quality
It goes without saying that the best melody -but with terrible sound quality- is like a diamond in the dirt: it just won’t stand out. Whilst there there are several factors that determine the quality of sound, the single most important factor is the condition of your guitar strings. For a few tell-tale signs that you need to invest in a new set of strings look for:
* Problems with tuning. At first you’re going to think that maybe you’re a little rusty. But with a few practice runs you’re going to notice that it could be a problem with the strings themselves.
* Discolored, stained strings. When your strings start exhibiting a brownish, unattractive color then it’s probably time to change your strings.
* Flat, Dull sound. Colorless music doesn’t leave a mark or make a lasting impression. With the regular use, a dull, flat sound will soon replace the usually strong, clear and effervescent sound that it used to release.
What Affects The Overall Lifespan Of You Guitar Strings
Like you and me, an acoustic guitar has a lifespan. While average performing guitarists change their strings after a year, regular performers may have to change theirs every month to ensure consistency. It therefore boils down to the frequency of use more than anything else. Be that as it may, sometimes it depends on external factors, like:
1. Cleanliness of hands.
2. Texture of pick used.
3. Frequency of string adjustment.
4. Brand name.
Passing Remarks
There is only so much you can do to maintain a consistent quality of sound. But there are trusted brand names that -although expensive- make excellent quality strings that are both durable and exemplary when it comes to releasing the sensual feel of an acoustic guitar.
