How To Insulate New And Existing Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is amongst the most-recognized roofing style globally. The roofing is popular mainly because it’s durable and requires minimal maintenance. The roofs are made of mostly aluminum and stainless steel but we have a few options made of copper. But in spite of their advantages, these roofs are affected by noise and intense heat. These issues often make the house or business property uncomfortable if you don’t take action. And when it comes to taking action, the best thing you can do for your metal roof is to insulate it.

Insulated roof panels helps you to conserve energy and thus you don’t have to suffer high heating or cooling costs. Additionally, insulated roofing protects you from the disturbing noise. You can insulate new metal roofing or an existing one.

For New Roofing

1. Foam Batting

Foam batting is a great insulation approach for the whole roof. The insulators come in form of panels and not the regular paper-covered fiberglass. You can use the foam on either side of the sheathing. Once you install the batting, you should seal the insulation with an effective duct tape to prevent air leakage.

2. Plywood Installation

Plywood is an effective insulator for metal roofing and thus you can install it as structural sheathing material. To do it:

• Lay the board perpendicularly to your roof joist.

• Use stainless steel or galvanized nails to fasten the board

• Cover the sheathing with building papers to protect against air leaks and moisture.

• Fasten the paper with staples or roofing nails.

For the Existing Roofing

1. Fiberglass Batting

This is an effective approach that can save you heating and cooling costs at home. You should identify the gaps under your roofing, between the sheathing and the purlins, and place the fiberglass there.

2. Spray Foam Insulation

You can either rent or buy a spray foam insulation set and use it to insulate your roof. You should:

• Make an opening on your ceiling to access the frames of the roof.

• Check for the presence of spray foam and if it’s not there, install it.

• Follow the guide on the sprayer to insulate the roof.

Final Thoughts

With the above approaches, you can be able to enjoy insulated metal roofing today. This will save you energy costs significantly while protecting you from noise. The approaches are easy to copy and you can implement most of them by yourself. However, if you are not a DIY person, you can hire a good insulated roofing company to help you out.
