Compare Personal Car Leasing

Vintage cream car parked on a desert roadA car advertised at a low monthly price can look straightforward until you read the quotation closely. Personal car leasing is commonly arranged as Personal Contract Hire, or PCH. You pay to use the vehicle for an agreed term, rather than buying it outright. The usual structure is an initial rental followed by fixed monthly payments. That initial rental is often several monthly payments made in advance, not a refundable deposit. Before comparing offers for personal car leasing, check the total payable, the payment schedule and every included charge.

PCH normally ends with the car being returned, so the final payment does not usually make you the owner. That differs from buying with a loan, where the finance arrangement is intended to lead to ownership once the balance is cleared. A finance lease has a different structure and is often associated with business use; it may not give a personal customer a purchase option. Do not infer ownership from the size of the monthly figure. The agreement should identify the vehicle owner and explain exactly what happens after the last scheduled payment.

The quotation is shaped by several choices beyond the make and model. Your annual mileage allowance sets the expected distance for each year, and exceeding the agreed total can trigger an excess mileage charge. A lower allowance may reduce the quoted payment, but it can be a false saving if your routine is busy. Write down commuting miles, regular school or family journeys, holidays and likely weekend use before requesting a quote. The contract term, often stated in months, also affects the monthly cost because it changes how the vehicle’s expected depreciation is spread.

Maintenance is not automatically included. One contract may cover scheduled servicing, tyres, breakdown assistance and vehicle tax, while another may leave some or all of those costs with you. Read the maintenance section rather than relying on a salesperson’s description of the monthly payment. A driver covering 8,000 miles a year who chooses a 5,000-mile allowance could exceed the limit through commuting alone, before holidays are counted. Keep a simple mileage note in your phone for the first few months. It can expose an unrealistic allowance early enough to discuss a change.

Personal circumstances deserve attention before the agreement is signed. A 36-month term might appear manageable, but a new job could create a longer commute or make a larger vehicle necessary after only a year. Handing back the keys early is not always a straightforward exit, and the provider’s termination calculation may be substantial. Ask whether the agreement permits a transfer, what an early settlement involves and how a requested vehicle change would be treated. Do not assume that selling the car yourself will resolve the contract, because PCH generally does not give you ownership to sell.

A provider will normally assess affordability and may carry out a credit search. A declined application does not prove that leasing will never suit you, but repeated applications should be considered carefully. Budget for the full motoring cost, not merely the advertised payment. Fuel, insurance, parking, repairs outside a maintenance package and possible mileage charges all belong in the calculation. For example, a £280 monthly lease payment is only one part of the budget. Before applying, check the quotation, your regular outgoings and the bank statement you would use to verify what remains each month.

Returning a leased vehicle does not mean presenting it in showroom condition, since ordinary use leaves minor marks. Damage beyond the contract’s reasonable wear and tear standard can lead to charges, and inspection criteria vary. Request the return guide in writing and inspect the car before collection. Photograph each existing mark at delivery, then repeat the process near the end, keeping the images with your servicing records. Check for both keys, charging cables, the parcel shelf and other supplied items. PCP can look similar but may include a future value and purchase option, whereas leasing payments generally reflect expected depreciation, funding and contract terms. Reliable leasing cost guidance can help you compare the whole commitment with ownership.
