How To Make Students Speak In English

English is globally used on all interactive platforms and learning portals. It is considered as a standard of developed personality on professional and social levels. It is very important for the how to make students speak in English with fluency and confidence. So that they become capable of representing themselves on international platforms.In this note, you will learn “how to make students speak in English.”

Basic techniques to promote English speaking in students are as follows:

-Discussions: Students must be engaged in mutual discussions about the events or ideas of a particular lesson. Groups of 4-5 students should be categorized to discuss on a controversial idea. They must be free to agree/disagree, express and listen to the shared ideas. The group which defends the idea in best way is then assigned as the winner. The fluency and confidence in spoken English should be the orientation of discussion and not the grammatical mistakes.

-Listening: Polite and humble use of conversational English by the teacher helps to gain confidence and interest of students to learn spoken English. Students who can use very little of English must be guided to follow the teacher in very few and simple words of English. Lengthy, harsh and difficult words would embarrass the student and he would hesitate to accept English as his second language. Beginners must not be pressurized but to understand the need and fun of learning spoken English.

-Maintain eye contact: Managing an eye contact with student during conversation makes them to do the same. Through the eye contact the student teaches the actual use of voice, expressions during the pronunciation of particular words.

-Storytelling: Encouraging a student to narrate a story in the class enable the teacher to know his speaking skills as well as gets the involvement of whole class. Certain activities of students’ choice like guess the song, poems, favourite cartoons, favourite dishes etc can be good options to seek the interest of student on speaking over the topics.

-Teaching vocabulary- The most neglected point in spoken English is to add on new words in student’s learning daily. Due to less knowledge of perfect words to fit in a conversation, the students hesitate to be the part of a discussion. Some key words related to the topic of conversation must be introduced daily to the students.

-Breaking up words- Long and difficult words can be broken into two or three parts to make it easy for the child to understand it. The teacher should not forget that the beginners find it very difficult to catch and learn a new word instantly. So they must be patient enough to give the requisite time to the student to learn new words or topics.

-Repeat drills: Although it seems boring to both teacher and student but it is very important to repeat the same conversational topics and phrases. It enables thorough learning of the important phrases and students become comfortable in using them in conversation.
