Pain on the outside of the hip can appear during stairs, hills, longer walks, or the first few steps after sitting in a car. Lying on that side may feel uncomfortable, and pressing the tender area can produce a bruised sensation.
These symptoms are often labelled hip bursitis, although the bursa may not be the only irritated structure.
Nearby gluteal tendons, muscles, or the hip joint can create similar pain. An assessment with physio for hip bursitis can help identify the likely contributors and set a sensible starting point for treatment.
