University Education

Every orthopaedic specialist is a fully qualified medical doctor. Now, this is how it works. First you graduate from high school then you study for your MBBS degree in a reputable university. The MBBS is an abbreviation for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. It takes about 6-7 seven of post-secondary study to get this degree. After you complete the MBBS programme, you also do your housemanship in a reputable hospital. In most cases, housemanship (also called internship) lasts 12-24 months. After this training, you are a qualified medical doctor and you receive your license to practice medicine. At this point you are a general practitioner but you are not yet a specialist in orthopaedics.

Becoming a Specialist in Orthopaedics

After you get the MBBS degree, you take a specialist course in orthopaedics. During this program, you study advanced anatomy, orthopaedic surgery and other relevant courses. This program has both practical and theoretical aspects and gives you great training. At the end this course, you are now a specialist orthopaedic doctor and you can begin to put all that training to work.
