Aging Supplement: What Is NMN?

What is NMN? Aging is a natural process. Everybody will experience this in different ways and at different rates. We reach our prime and face a gradual decline. Many would like to postpone this for as long as possible because the effects on the body can be depressing and difficult. No one wants to see their skin dry and wrinkly. No athlete enjoys losing muscle strength, speed, and balance. The reduction of visual acuity, aural sensitivity, and mental sharpness are all unwelcome developments as well. Scientists are hard at work in finding drugs that can boost longevity and they may have stumbled on a great candidate with NMN.

What is NMN? Nicotinamide mononucleotide or NMN is an organic molecule that is derived from nicotinamide and ribose. It is a member of the niacin family, also known as Vitamin B3. It is an essential substance that is naturally found within the body. We have enzymes that convert it to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide which plays a crucial role in metabolism. This fact has led many researchers to study its potential for providing humans with a means to counter aging and neurological decline. Related substances such as nicotinamide riboside are also being touted as miracle supplements with similar effects.

What does the science say?

The most publicized studies related to NMN and aging have involved mice. These clinical trials are an important stage of product development because they test the effectiveness and the safety of the of NMN. The results are promising with long-term intake in mice mitigating the physiological decline that is usually associated with aging. There has also been some human trials with up to 500mg being proven to be safe for adult males. Long-term administration of this supplement on human subjects are still underway. Their results will be interesting to see as they will provide a clearer picture of NMN’s effects.

Several supplement companies are already marketing NMN products. They are bullish on the preliminary findings of the mice research and its likely similarities to human trials. The reality is that more data is needed to make a definite conclusion. However, this is not stopping people from getting their capsules and utilizing them for their own ends. If you plan to do this, then you might want to consult your doctor first. You might have existing conditions or current medications that are incompatible with NMN.
