Porsche AG is German manufacturer of high quality sports cars, SUVs and Sedans. It was founded on 25 April, 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche. Porsche 356 was the first production model by the company. From 1982-1988 Porsche 924 model was manufactured. It was first production of Porsche to have fully automatic transmission with a 4 speed manual and 5 speed Getrag manual. It had maximum top speed of 134mph. Its four cylinder engine with maximum power output of 162PS at 5900rpm. It proved to be a traditional sports car. The sales of 924 model were good enough but Porsche purists complained about lack of power output and reputation in racing.
To overcome the issues coming in performance of 924 model, from 1982-1991 a far more advanced model Porsche 944 was manufactured. It was based on 924 model but comprised more contours. It has pop up headlights, bumpers integrated in body shape, flared wheel arches, front spoiler in exterior colour and side protection strips in exterior colour.
Following are the three models of Porsche 944 as per the successive years of manufacturing:
-Porsche 944(1982-85): This foundational model, vanished the gap between Porsche 924 and Porsche 911. It has 2.5 litre engine with 163 hp power output.
-Porsche 944S(Model Year 1987-88): It was the first model to have four valved engine with a power output of 190hp.
-Porsche 944S2(Model Year 1989-91): This model had more muscular body with a 3.0 litre four valved engine and a power output of 211hp. Its performance grades matched with that of Turbo and 944S2 was also available in Cabriolet version.
The 944 models distinguished from all previous productions of Porsche in its high power output. The unique weight distribution was excellently managed by rear mounted five speed transaxle. The high sales and popularity among sports car lovers gave excellent benefits to Porsche’s brand image.
In period magazine road test reviews including that of “Automobile” Porsche 944 was declared as the car a Porsche for a new era. The turbocharged version 944 S2 was competent to 911 model on a racetrack. Its far more superior ergonomics with 2+2 hatchback design. It is still considered as the best handling RWD(rear wheel drive) car of all time. It is far more a pleasure car than being a typical sports car.
Porsche 944 Production:
-163,192 cars in the Porsche 944 family were produced between 1982 and 1991.
-113,070 Porsche 944s were made in total between 1982 and 1989. Out of these 56,921 were exported to the United States.
-25,245 944 Turbo models were made in total, out of which 13,982 were exported to the United States.
-14,071 944S2 models were produced between 1989–1991. Out of which 3,650 were exported to the United States.
The price range from the basic 944 to the superior turbo model is $10,700 to $80,500 respectively. Besides the varied range of prices, Porsche 944 models are the first choice of Porsche lovers.
