Arrival is a Science Fiction Movie released in November of 2016. It is based on a story written by Ted Chiang and a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer and Ted Chiang. The major actors in the movie are Amy Adams, who plays Professor Dr. Louise Banks, a renowned linguist; Jeremy Renner plays Ian Donnelly; and Michael Stuhlbarg is the CIA’s Agent Halpern. Forest Whitaker plays Colonel Baker. Denis Villeneuve, a French Canadian directed the movie.
Chaos takes over the world after 12 spacecraft shaped like monolithic obelisks land all over the planet. They cannot communicate with us, and we cannot understand them, so Louise Banks is recruited to decipher their language. Meanwhile, all the world’s armed forces are anxiously awaiting the go ahead to wage war against the invaders if they are hostile.
Ian Donnelly is the theoretical physicist paired with Louise to produce the way to communicate with the aliens. Both professionals have been recruited by Colonel Baker of the army. The army oversees every action taken by Louise and Ian along with their support staff, all soldiers.
Every 18 hours the base of the Obelisk opens allowing the humans to enter. They enter the gravity distorting entity to eventually reach the area where the aliens reside. They are indeed foreign with their heptapod bodies partially distorted during a fog filled interior space. The humans see the occasional squid/octopus like finger write out inky shapes against the glass-like protection separating them from the world.
Their language has never been heard or read by any human on earth. Now, Louise and Ian must figure out why they’re here and what they’re trying to tell us. Louise’s tragic loss of a young daughter is worked into the theme of the Arrival movie explained. She’s experiencing time differently. In her past, which is her future, she lost a daughter. It’s in a different order than usual. Trying to understand the alien language affected her brain.
The Arrival movie explained shows us that these advanced beings are aware of their future need for our help, so they reach out to us. Rather than waiting, they attempt to transcend the gap between us, so that they can establish positive relations with us. The story is centered around the topics of language, cooperation, free will and personal responsibility, because they all lead to choices about how we live our lives and how we choose to live peacefully or not with others.
